The layout of the New York Yankees playoff roster for their 2011 ALDS matchup with the Detroit Tigers shouldn’t surprise many people. The only real news that the Yankees revealed Friday was their intent on only using a three man staff during the first round of the playoffs.
New York has elected to go with C.C. Sabathia, Ivan Nova and Freddy Garcia as the three starters for their first round playoff series with the Tigers. It had been already been established that Phil Hughes and A.J. Burnett would be pitching out of the bullpen, while starting pitcher Bartolo Colon failed to make the ALDS roster altogether.
Along with Burnett and Hughes, the Yankees eight man bullpen includes Luis Ayala, Cory Wade, Boone Logan (the only lefty), David Robertson, Rafael Soriano and Marino Rivera.
Jesus Montero’s hot September earned him a spot on the Yankees roster as Russell Martin’s backup behind the plate. The infielders to make New York’s playoff squad are Mark Teixeira, Robinson Cano, Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Eric Chavez and Eduardo Nunez.
The Yankees outfield will consist of regulars Nick Swisher, Brett Gardner and Curtis Granderson and backups Andruw Jones and Chris Dickerson.
The Tigers and Yankees begin their series this evening at 8:37 p.m.
