In this issue of Sprouts we are highlighting articles from: Puckett’s Pond, Rising Apple, Frisco Fastball, Kings of Kauffman and Sodo Mojo. We hope you enjoy!
Our first stop this week is one of my old stomping grounds, Puckett’s Pond, where Nathaniel Gilmore came up with a different take on a Twins Top-10 Prospect List. Instead of listing the 10 “best” he chose to list the the 10 most “exciting” prospects in the organization.

Up in the cleanup slot is Kings of Kauffman as Michael Engel reports and reacts to the trade that shipped Kila Ka’aihue off to Oakland at the end of the season. As Michael correctly surmises, the Royals did well to get something for Kila since his departure from the organization was imminent this offseason. The A’s also did well to trade for a player that might be able to help them in coming seasons before he was made available to all MLB organizations.
On the other side of the ledger, the Royals landed an organizational arm that will provide some rotational depth and insurance in Omaha next season while they attempt to build rotations at both the Triple-A and major league levels.

Finally Sodo Mojo’s Harrison Crow focused some attention on the draft. In his article on the 27th he put the 3rd and 4th overall picks from the last seven drafts side by side and came to the conclusion that the 3rd overall picks have turned out better by a margin of 5-2. Most of the guys in his comparisons have a lot of career left, and you can even make an argument that 2004’s 3rd pick, Philip Humber, still has a chance to wind up better than that years 4th pick, Jeff Niemann. In fact if you go by career ERA+ Humber’s 103 is superior to Niemann’s 92.
Logically you’d expect the guys drafted 3rd to turn out better than those taken 4th, but I was surprised by how definitive the list looks to be as of right now.
