The Boston Red Sox organization remains in flux, as it’s now being reported that general manager Theo Epstein would leave the club if the right opportunity presented itself. Much of the talk surrounding Epstein has involved the Chicago Cubs, but there may be another intriguing option out there for Theo.
Following the Red Sox September collapse, the club and longtime manager Terry Francona parted ways. This took place even after Epstein commented publically several times that putting the blame on Francona would be short-sighted and just plain wrong.
The separation proved that Epstein and Red Sox management may not be seeing eye-to-eye. While Epstein seemed to favor Francona’s return, Boston brass needed to see at least one head roll and were willing to let their manager walk.
Now, before they can continue its managerial search, the Red Sox have to figure out what Epstein’s future is with the team. Epstein is said to be very comfortable in Boston and feels a strong sense of loyalty to team owner Jim Hendry. Those close to Epstein also say that the general manager would want to leave things in order if he ever did in fact depart Boston.
At this point, it would be hard to argue that things are in order in Red Sox Nation. But, at the same time, the opportunity to become GM of the Cubs doesn’t come along every day.
Many have noted the fact that, if Epstein were able to bring a World Series to Wrigley, he would live on as one of the greatest general managers in baseball history. Not only would Epstein have ended the Red Sox 85 year championship draught, but he’d do the same in Chicago where it’s been over a decade since they’ve won the World Series.
Another possible landing spot for Epstein could be out west. The LA Angels also have an opening for a general manager and have solid ownership as well as the ability to spend money. Though he was born in New York, Epstein is said to have taken a liking for the West Coast during his time with the San Diego Padres.
Because Epstein’s murky status with the Red Sox is holding up their offseason, some believe this will get wrapped up one way or another fairly quickly.
