World Series Game 1: Cardinals Edge Rangers to Take Opener

The St. Louis Cardinals used timely hitting and another strong performance from their bullpen to take game one of the World Series, defeating the Texas Rangers 3-2.

Starters Chris Carpenter and C.J. Wilson managed to silence their potent adversaries over the first few innings.  Wilson began the game with three scoreless one-hit frames while Carpenter held Texas in check through four, allowing no runs and two hits.

But the offenses would eventually come to life.  Lance Berkman got the scoring started with his two-run single in the 3rd, and Texas answered with two of their own in the 4th on Mike Napoli’s bomb to right.

The game remained knotted at two entering the bottom of the 6th.  After Berkman popped out, NLCS MVP David Freese continued his power surge, doubling to deep right center.  Wilson, who struggled with his command all night, then threw a wild pitch, allowing Freese to advance to third.  Yadier Molina couldn’t cash the run in, striking out instead.

After a Nick Punto walk and with the pitcher’s spot due up, Cardinals manager Tony La Russa called on Allen Craig.  Texas countered by going to their pen, bringing in Alexi Ogando.  After falling behind Ogando, Craig singled to right, driving in what would be the deciding run.

Being pinch-hit for, Carpenter’s night was done after 87 pitches.  The veteran allowed two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out four batters over his six innings of work.

La Russa’s famous parade of relievers followed Carpenter to the mound and did what they’ve being doing all postseason, shut down the opposition.  After Fernando Salas allowed a walk and single in the 7th, Cardinals relievers logged 2 2/3 perfect frames.

For the Rangers, Wilson was charged with all three runs on four hits and six walks over 5 2/3 innings.  Ian Kinsler and Adrian Beltre each collected two hits, while Nelson Cruz singled and walked.  Josh Hamilton, who is clearly hampered by a left groin strain, went 0-4 with a strike out.

The World Series continues tonight in St. Louis.  Texas hands the ball to Colby Lewis, hoping he can even the series before it returns to Arlington, while Jaime Garcia will be asked to keep the momentum going for the St. Louis.
