The Theo Epstein-to Chicago fallout continues, as the San Diego Padres announced that Josh Byrnes will become their new general manager.  The expected move, which became official last night, has Byrnes replacing Jed Hoyer in San Diego.  Hoyer and assistant general manager Jason McLeod are heading to Chicago, where they will team up with Epstein.

Byrnes, who brings five years of general managing experience to the table, began his career with the Cleveland Indians’ front office in 1994.  Byrnes moved through the organization and went on to become the assistant GM of the Colorado Rockies (2000-02) and Boston Red Sox (2003-05).  It was in 2006 that Byrnes took over as the general manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks, a position he held until the summer of 2010.

Following his split with Arizona, Byrnes joined the Padres, becoming the clubs senior vice president of baseball operations this year.

Hoyer and McLeod both worked as assistants under Epstein in Boston.  Because the pair each had years remaining on their contracts with San Diego, the Cubs will be sending some sort of compensation to the Padres.  At this point it looks like it will be a player to be named later which could turn into cash considerations.
