Sprouts: Jays Affiliates, Free Agent Filing and Pirates Internal Options

“The time for action is now. It’s never too late to do something.”

That phrase is attributed to French writer Antoine de Saint-Exupery, but I am using it here as a justification for posting this week’s Sprouts late on a Wednesday night. Since Antoine said that it is never too late to do something I’m going to press forward though I did contemplate skipping the feature for the week. He also said that the time for action is now so next week I’ll try to be more punctual and get this published on Monday as planned and intended. By the way this week I blame Halloween and my 4-year old son staying home from school the following day (with an illness unrelated to eating candy).

Now on to the links!

I don’t know about the rest of you but I think Canada is a little incomplete.

What it needs is more baseball, but the sadly (?) Nationals aren’t moving back to Montreal any time soon. But … the bright northern light that is the Toronto Blue Jays organization might be able to fill that void by moving one of their minor league affiliates to Ottawa after the 2012 season. Sound crazy? Don’t believe me? Well then, check out Jared MacDonald’s November 1st article on Jays Journal.

And then like, hose off you hoser (okay not really, I want to you keep reading)

While it’s not directly related to the minor leagues, 148 players filed for free agency over the weekend. Where these players land will play a role in where teams assign their prospects and a significant role in where journeymen and quad-a players wind up offseason. It will also surely impact the trade market and where there are trades there are usually minor leaguers involved. Oh, and I almost forgot to mention the Type-A and B free agents which of course means potential draft pick compensation! Fortunately MLB Trade Rumors makes it easy for all baseball fans to keep tabs on the ever changing career paths of these players with their 2012 MLB Free Agent list.

If you are really attentive, you might have noticed I’ve started adding more team specific sites to the S2S blogroll that happen to focus on the minor leagues and prospects of their respective organizations. I know there are more out there* that I haven’t added yet but I am working on it.

*Suggestions are of course welcome via Twitter or our Facebook page as long as those sites are focused on the minors, prospects and/or the MLB draft.

As an aside and example of the above, Seth Speaks is one of my personal favorite sites, but since he covers both the majors and minors of the Minnesota Twins, in great detail by the way, you won’t find his site in the S2S blogroll. However you can find Seth’s site and many others on the Friends of S2S page.

Jays Prospects and Road to Yankee Stadium have been linked up on our blogroll for a while, but in the last week or so I’ve added Future Redbirds, Padres Prospects, Phuture Phillies, Pine Tar Press (Royals) and Pirates Prospects. I’ve also added them to my RSS reader so you can expect I will be linking to some of their content in Sprouts each week moving forward.

But, speaking of Pirates Prospects, they recently published an excellent article on some of their internal options to fill some holes on the major league roster for the upcoming season.
