2012 MLB Free Agents: Marlins Meet Reyes, Interested in Beltran

Keeping their active, early postseason going, the Marlins met with free agent shortstop Jose Reyes yesterday and are now showing interest in outfielder Carlos Beltran.  It was also made known Wednesday that club officials will be in the Dominican Republic today to watch Yoennis Cespedes during a private workout.

Yesterday on the Dan Le Batard radio show, a Marlins’ team official said that he and others took Reyes out for lunch in the Miami area.  Reyes has been connected to the Marlins for some time now.

This may surprise some, as Miami already maintains the services of an All-Star shortstop, Hanley Ramirez.  If the Marlins were to add Reyes, Ramirez has said that he would agree to a position change.  With Reyes moving into the role of everyday shortstop, Ramirez would likely slide over to cover the hot corner for the Marlins.

While Reyes may be old news, Beltran is one of the more recent names being linked to Miami.  The veteran is seen as one of the premier outfield options on the free agent market.

The Marlins are also in on perhaps the best all-around outfielder expected to join the free agent frenzy.  Cuban-defector Yoennis Cespedes has been tied to several clubs this offseason, but is seen as an especially good fit for the Marlins considering their desire to add impact players and Miami’s strong ties with Cuban culture.
