Wilson Ramos Kidnapping: Still No Word

Yesterday, baseball fans awoke to the frightening story of Wilson Ramos’s abduction from his home in Venezuela.  Today, Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post reports that Ramos’s family has still had no contact with the kidnappers.  Though many expect Ramos to be OK, the longer it takes to hear from his captors the scarier this things gets.

Marfa Mata, a friend of Ramos and a spokeswoman for the family, communicated via Twitter this morning that after “another long night waiting”, the family has not received “a message or call about Wilson”.  Mata finished her tweet by urging friends, fans and general well-wishers to “keep praying”.

Yesterday afternoon, several new details were released regarding the kidnapping of Ramos.  It was reported by El Universal, a Venezuelan newspaper, that before Ramos was taken he had signed an autograph for a youngster playing stickball.

The kidnappers then pulled up in an orange 2007 Chevrolet Captiva and also used another unidentified truck.  Two men stepped out of the Captiva and approached Ramos.  One grabbed Ramos around the neck and put a gun to his head.  During the kidnapping, Ramos was with his father, brother and cousin.  No one was harmed during the abduction.

From the time the story broke, most expected Ramos to be returned unharmed either after he was robbed or following a ransom request.  At this point, there has been no contact from Ramos’s captors.  Some specialists believe that the family and police could be keeping information from the press to protect Ramos, deciding not to deal with the kidnappers through the media.

People have gathered outside of Ramos’s home in Venezuela to pray, and a vigil has been organized outside of Nationals Park this evening at 6:00 p.m.  Hopefully by then Ramos will be safely back with his family.
