It’s being reported that the Cleveland Indians are nearing a one-year agreement to bring center fielder Grady Sizemore back into the fold. Cleveland, who declined to pick up Sizemore’s $9 million option for 2012, is said to be putting the finishing touches on an incentive-laden deal that will keep the 29-year-old In Cleveland for another year.
After the Indians declined Sizemore’s club option they said they had interest in bringing the oft-injured center fielder back next season. But several teams showed early interest in Sizemore and many expected him to join a new club this winter.
Sizemore, one of the more intriguing options on the free agent market, was approached by several teams early in free agency. The Rockies have shown significant interest in Sizemore, while large market clubs such as the Yankees, Rangers, Cubs, Red Sox and Phillies have all been linked to the free agent.
But, according to Sizemore’s agent, Joe Urbon, the Indians approached Sizemore “with an aggressive offer”. Urbon addressed reporters yesterday through a note stating he and Sizemore “will continue to work through details with the Indians over the weekend”.
It’s been known that Sizemore has been seeking a short-term deal which will allow him to build up his value. Though he’s shown incredible talent over his career and is only 29, many clubs have been hesitant to sign Sizemore because of his injury history. Grady hasn’t played in more than 106 games since the 2008 season, as serious knee injuries have caused him to miss significant time.
Though no updates have emerged since yesterday afternoon, many believe that a deal will be announced soon, perhaps in the next couple of days.
