Very sad news coming out of the Netherlands this morning; it’s being reported that Seattle Mariners outfielder Greg Halman was stabbed to death early Monday.  Halman’s brother has been arrested as a suspect.

The police were called to a home in Rotterdam early this morning.  When paramedics arrived, they found Halman with a stab wound.  Halman was bleeding profusely and the paremedics were not able to resuscitate him.

The name of Halman’s brother or any other details have not been released.  At this point, all that has been said by the Rotterdam Police is that the brother “is under arrest and right now he is being questioned”.  According to a spokeswoman for the department, “it will take some time to figure out what exactly happened”.

Halman was originally signed as an amateur free agent by the Minnesota Twins, but he began his professional career with the Mariners.

Making his professional debut in rookie ball at the age of 17, Halman made it to the Double-A level by the age of 20.  Entering the 2009 season, Halman was regarded by Baseball America as a top 100 prospect.  The 24-year-old has maintained a career line of .251/.312/.483 during his time in the minors.

Last season, Halman spent most of his time playing for the Mariners Triple-A affiliate.  After making his major league debut in 2010, Halman spent 35 games with the Mariners last year, collecting 20 hits including two doubles and home runs over his 91 plate appearances.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Halman family.
