Pen Polls: Who Will Sign Jose Reyes?
We’re on the brink of the 2011 Winter Meetings, and the Hot Stove figures to heat up exponentially over the next week. More details should emerge regarding the futures of some of the market’s top free agents. One of these top targets is shortstop Jose Reyes. As the offseason has progressed, rumors have swirled around the speedy star and recently it’s been reported that Reyes’ suitors may have dwindled to two, the Marlins and Mets.
We’d like to get your thoughts on the future of the top shortstop on the free agent market. Are the Reyes sweepstakes truly down to a two man race, or do you think other suitors including the Phillies, Brewers and Braves are still in play? Who do you think will sign Jose Reyes?
Even though many entered the offseason expecting the Mets to have little-to-no chance to retain Reyes, they jumped back into the mix last week by upping their offer to their former shortstop to $80 million over five years. While the Mets may be willing to bump up the contract’s total value, they are apparently not interested in extending Reyes anything more than a five-year deal.
Meanwhile, the Marlins “hopes are high” that they will be able to reel in Reyes. The Mets offer puts them in the range of Miami’s reported $75-90 million offer. For what it’s worth, sources say that “everyone seems to think Reyes is the right fit for the Marlins”.
Other teams such as the Phillies, Braves, Brewers, Tigers and Giants are all said to be out of the running for Reyes, but these things can change in the blink of an eye this time of year.
