This weekend it was reported that the White Sox are “dangling” starting pitcher John Danks. Along with Danks, the White Sox have also been shopping starter Gavin Floyd and Joel Sherman of the New York Post is reporting that Chicago’s requesting “big returns” for their starters. SI.com’s Jon Heyman confirms this report, noting that the White Sox requested top young players Jesus Montero and Manny Banuelos from the New York Yankees for Danks.
White Sox general manager Ken Williams made it known early this offseason that his club would be willing to move veteran players for the right price. The right price, according to reports, seems to be extremely high at the moment. Sherman says that Williams is taking advantage of the current “seller’s market” for starting pitchers to request sky-high return for his players.
For an example of Williams’ high demands, you have to look no further than the trade he proposed to the Yankees. In return for Danks, Williams apparently wanted both Banuelos and Montero.
Banuelos and Montero entered the 2011 season regarded as two of the best prospects in baseball. Montero had another strong showing in Triple-A before busting onto the major league scene this fall. Banuelos has yet to reach the majors, but he is a 20-year-old left-handed starter that split time between Double and Triple-A in 2011.
The Yankees response to Chicago’s request of Montero and Banuelos was probably akin to laughing out loud. According to Heyman, the Yankees wouldn’t be willing to give up either one of Banuelos or Montero straight-up for Danks.
