The biggest news of the second day of the Winter Meetings thus far is the White Sox trading closer Sergio Santos for pitching prospect Nestor Molina.
I discussed Molina on my top 100 prospect list last week, so I don’t have a whole lot to add to that, but to me, the deal makes a lot of sense for both sides. The Jays are swimming in starting pitcher prospects, and the White Sox have a number of excellent relief prospects, so both teams dealt from strength to address weaknesses.
With Santos out of the picture, top prospect Addison Reed should emerge as Chicago’s closer in 2012, possibly set up by fellow rookie Dan Remenowsky. Meanwhile, Molina becomes easily the best prospect in the Chicago system.
I’ll try to continue to post some quick analysis of any prospect-related moves that come in the next couple of days; that hopefully includes Thursday’s Rule 5 Draft.
