The Oakland A’s are staying active on the trade market this winter, as players such as Gio Gonzalez and Andrew Bailey are known to be available at the right price. It was reported earlier this offseason that nearly everyone on the club is in fact on the table this winter, and the newest name to be included in trade rumors is Trevor Cahill. According to Ken Rosenthol of Fox Sports, the Arizona Diamondbacks are not only discussing Gonzalez with the A’s but are also targeting Cahill.
Cahill is another of Oakland’s young and promising starting pitchers. Hitting the majors in 2009 at the age of 21, Cahill has more than held his own at the big league level. The 23-year-old has a career ERA and WHIP of 3.91 and 1.322 over his 96 starts. Since joining the A’s, Cahill has started at least 30 game and logged at least 178 2/3 innings per year.
After a very strong 2010 campaign that garnered Cahill Cy Young consideration, the right-hander struggled a bit last season. Over his career high 34 starts in 2011, Cahill maintained an ERA and WHIP of 4.16 and 1.425.
While Cahill’s name is new to the rumor circuit, the A’s have been entertaining offers for Gonzalez for weeks.
Beyond the Diamondbacks, Gonzalez has also been tied to the Blue Jays, Tigers, Phillies, Reds, Nationals, Red Sox, Rangers and Marlins this offseason.
In any deal for Gonzalez, the A’s are looking for at least two high-value prospects and few mid-range prospects according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.
