Still no news has come out regarding the official winner of the Yu Darvish sweepstakes, but rumors have slowly leaked out as the morning has progressed. On top yesterday’s news, we now know that several other clubs submitted bids for Darvish. On top of that, one team has reportedly made quite a substantial bid for Darvish. Here are the latest Yu Darvish rumors.
Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News is reporting that the Toronto Blue Jays put a “whopper” of an offer out for Darvish before yesterday’s deadline. This has created quite the “buzz”, according to Grant, and many feel that the Blue Jays bid may have reached north of $50 million.
Jim Bowden of MLB Network says that the Rangers have also submitted a bid for Darvish. Grant believes Texas’s offer was in the $40 million range.
Beyond the Blue Jays and Rangers, we already knew that the Yankees had put forward a bid for Darvish. While they have been continually linked to Darvish, New York’s offer for the 25-year-old is said to be “lukewarm”.
The Chicago Tribune’s Phil Rodgers confirms that the Cubs have also placed a bid for Darvish. Rodgers indicates that the Daisuke Matsuzaka experience hasn’t scared Cubs president Theo Epstein away from top Japanese talent. Rodgers hears that the Cubs are one of “three to 10” teams that have placed a bid on Darvish.
At this point, we know the number of bidders for Darvish to be at least four, and more teams figure to be revealed as the day continues.
