2011 MLB Trade Rumors: Red Sox, Royals Talked Joakim Soria

According to Rob Bradford of WEEI.com, the Boston Red Sox have “had discussions” with the Kansas City Royals regarding their closer, Joakim Soria.  Though they recently acquired late-inning reliever Mark Melancon from the Houston Astros, the Red Sox are reportedly still seeking arms for the back end of their ‘pen this winter.  Besides Soria, the Red Sox have also checked in on Andrew Bailey of the Oakland A’s and former Philadelphia Phillies closer Ryan Madson.

Bradford says that the Red Sox contacted the Royals “about the possibility of dealing for” Soria.  According to Bradford, these talks didn’t get too far because Kansas City was requesting “a couple solid pieces”.

The Royals have made it known that, while they were willing to listen to offers for Soria, teams should know that they will want significant return.  Specifically, reports say the Royals are looking for a frontline starter in return for Soria.

Soria is such an attractive piece because he’s been able to establish his role as closer and he has the potential to be controlled at an affordable rate through 2014.  Next season, Soria is set to make $6 million and the Royals then hold team options for 2013-14 for $8 and $8.75 million.

Over his five seasons with the Royals, Soria has held an ERA and WHIP of 2.40 and 1.043 while posting a SO/9 of 9.7 and a BB/9 of 2.5.  Soria has compiled 160 saves throughout his career as the Royals closer.

Beyond Soria, the Red Sox have also been tied to Oakland A’s closer Andrew Bailey this offseason.  The Athletics are also said to be looking for significant return for Bailey.  But, while Soria isn’t necessarily expected to be traded, many feel Bailey will be moved this winter.

Ryan Madson, former closer for the Phillies, has also been linked to the Red Sox this winter.  It appears that, like other teams involved with Madson, Boston doesn’t want to offer the right-hander the long-term deal he desires at the price he’s commanding.
