Hanley Ramirez Prefers to Remain at Short
Earlier this week, Miami Marlins All-Star shortstop Hanley Ramirez offered his thoughts on a possible position change next season to the Associated Press’s Dionisio Soldevila. While his words seemed to indicate that Ramirez was perhaps finally inclined to do whatever it takes to help the Marlins, Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports hears differently. According to major league sources, Ramirez’s “stance remains unchanged”; “he has a strong preference to remain at shortstop”.
When the Marlins signed shortstop Jose Reyes to a six-year, $106 million, much of the attention turned to Ramirez. Would Hanley be willing to move over to third base to accommodate the acquisition of Reyes?
Originally, before the Reyes signing became official, Hanley seemed to be on board with such a move, if it were in the best interest of the Marlins. However, after it became clear the Marlins were serious about inking Reyes, Ramirez’s tone changed.
This caused some to speculate that the Marlins may be willing to trade Ramirez. Miami has since denied these reports, indicating that they have no interest in dealing their slugger.
Earlier this week, it appeared that the transition may go smoother than expected. While speaking with the AP, Ramirez noted that what he and manager Ozzie Guillen want is “to win with the Marlins”. Ramirez went on to say that it will be seen what is to happen with the position switch, but that “if it’s third base, OK”.
However, Rosenthal hears that Ramirez continues to be unsure about a potential move and that he still has a strong preference to stick at short. Rosenthal’s sources say that Ramirez is set to meet with Miami this week, and whatever the outcome, Hanley is expected to “handle the matter with the Marlins professionally”.
