Roy Oswalt Rumors: Yankees, Red Sox, Cardinals Eying Veteran

facebooktwitterreddit

Nick Carfado of the Boston Globe is reporting that the New York Yankees, St. Louis Cardinals and Boston Red Sox are all interested in free agent starting pitcher Roy Oswalt.

Once Oswalt and his representation made it known that the right-hander was willing to accept a one-year deal this winter, the market for the 34-year-old picked up considerably.

Coming off a relatively down year, Oswalt hopes to post strong numbers in 2012 and improve his stock heading into next offseason.  At that point, Oswalt may be able to sign the multi-year contract he originally sought this offseason.

A one-year deal puts Oswalt in play for several clubs that wouldn’t have been interested at his original asking price of three years.

The Red Sox and Yankees are each looking for rotation upgrades, but both clubs are hesitant to spend much money this winter.  It was reported yesterday that the Yankees are actively pursuing a number two starting pitcher this winter, and Oswalt has the career numbers that could place him in this category.

Beyond the American League East rivals, the Cardinals are interested in Oswalt.  The interest sounds mutual, as Carfado hears Oswalt “would love to pitch” in St. Louis.
