Matt Garza Rumors: Cubs “Asking for Moon” for Garza

As we approach the 2012 season, there are several viable starting pitching options still available.  However, few offer the potential impact of Cubs right-hander Matt Garza.  Because this is the case, Chicago’s president Theo Epstein has reportedly kept his asking price for Garza sky-high.  Things don’t figure to change anytime soon, as David Kaplan of CSNChicago.com is reporting that Epstein and the Cubs continue asking for the moon in exchange for Garza.

Garza is a 28-year-old starter that has logged impressive numbers over his six seasons in the majors.  During his past four seasons, Garza has logged at least 184 2/3 innings per year while holding ERA’s south of 4.00.

Three of those seasons were spent pitching for the Tampa Bay Rays who reside in the ultra-competitive American League East.  As a member of the Rays, Garza maintained an ERA and WHIP of 3.86 and 1.251.  In his first year with the Cubs, Garza posted a 3.32 ERA and 1.258 WHIP over his 31 starts spanning 198 frames.

The Cubs are reportedly seeking young starting pitchers in return for Garza, as Epstein has made it a priority to increase his pitching depth at the major and minor league levels.  Chicago has been willing to discuss Garza, but has requested not just one, but several top prospects from interested teams.

Garza is under team control for two more seasons, and Epstein has said that he would be willing to build a future rotation around an arm such as Garza.  For this reason, Chicago seems to feel  little pressure to move their ace, and Kaplan reported the Cubs are “prepared to wait until teams realize they need” Garza.
