Yankees Rumors: New York Seeking Bat, Carlos Pena “On Radar”

facebooktwitterreddit

Following Friday night’s flurry of action, the New York Yankees appear to have their starting rotation figured out.  Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com is reporting that the Yankees are now turning their attention to their offense, where Jesus Montero’s absence leaves a noticeable gap.  Heyman says the Yankees are seeking a bat and that Carlos Pena is “now on their radar”.

After trading away Montero as a part of the deal that landed them young, right-hander Michael Pineda, the Yankees have some question marks surrounding their designated hitters role.  This position figured to be occupied by Montero this summer, but now the Yankees will have to fill the vacancy created Friday evening.

To do so, Heyman says New York is scouring the free agent market.  There are several players remaining that could fit the bill of DH, but Heyman hears New York is checking in on free agent first baseman Carlos Pena.

Pena turned in another impressive season in 2011, his first with the Chicago Cubs.  The 33-year-old hit at a clip of .225/.357/.462 with 28 home runs, 27 doubles and 80 RBI’s.  Pena has a career OBP and OPS of .352 and .486 and has averaged just over 34 home runs per season over the past five years.
