Kenny Williams and the Chicago White Sox have stepped out of the Hot Stove limelight, but the club may not yet be done wheeling and dealing this winter. Jon Paul Morosi of Fox Sports is reporting that the White Sox continue to listen to offers on starting pitcher Gavin Floyd. The White Sox, who are currently in a period of transition, have already traded away several veteran players this offseason including Jason Frasor, Carlos Quentin and Sergio Santos.
Following the trade of closer Sergio Santos, many thought the flood gates could open in Chicago. Williams used the word ‘rebuilding’, and it looked as if several other veteran players would be following Santos out the door.
Then the White Sox signed veteran starting pitcher John Danks to a long-term contract extension, confusing everyone regarding their motives.
Since the Danks extension, Chicago has dealt away two more veteran pieces in Quentin and Frasor, and the club figures to be willing to listen on other players of interest.
Floyd would certainly be included in this group, as he qualifies as a young but seasoned arm that is under control at a relatively affordable rate for the next two seasons.
Over his eight years in the majors, Floyd has maintained an ERA of 4.50 to go with his 1.326 WHIP. Since joining the White Sox in 2007, Floyd’s numbers have been better (4.18 ERA, 1.274 WHIP) and the right-hander’s logged at least 187 1/3 innings per season.
Floyd posted a middling ERA of 4.37 but a more impressive 1.162 WHIP over his 193 2/3 innings in 2011. During that span, Floyd held a SO/9 of 7.0 and BB/9 of 2.1.
