Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com is reporting that free agent reliever Francisco Cordero is expected to select his next team by the end of this week. Gonzalez noted that there are four finalists in the Cordero sweepstakes, and it’s since been rumored that the Angels, Orioles, Blue Jays and Phillies are in the mix for the right-hander.
Last season for the Reds Cordero maintained a 2.45 ERA to go with his 1.019 WHIP over 69 2/3 innings pitched. Cordero compiled 37 saves for Cincy, giving the 36-year-old five straight years with 34 or more.
A major league veteran for 13 seasons, Cordero has a career ERA and WHIP of 3.17 and 1.333.
Despite these impressive numbers, Cordero has yet to find a home for 2012 and, while there’s certainly been interest in the right-hander, there’s no guarantee that Cordero will be a closer next season.
The Phillies already have Jonathan Papelbon. The Blue Jays traded for Sergio Santos and figure to at least give him a shot as their finisher. The Angels have youngster Jordan Walden. The only team that would likely offer Cordero the reins as closer would be the Orioles.
Cordero’s priorities, winning or closing, will likely drive his decision, which is expected by week’s end.
