Most of the yesterday’s news involving the Detroit Tigers had to do with their new free agent addition Prince Fielder. The $214 million man was introduced, and while most focused their attention on the big man, a few had questions regarding the injury that ultimately made Fielder’s presence possible. Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski told reporters that Victor Martinez was receiving a second opinion on his injured ACL in Colorado yesterday. If the tear in his ACL is confirmed, Martinez is expected to undergo surgery today.
A little over a week ago news of Martinez’s ACL injury was released. While working out at his offseason home in Orlando, Martinez was doing a lateral move when his right foot slipped and all his weight came down on his knee. Martinez notified the Tigers training staff who later ran an MRI which revealed the torn ACL.
Unless something drastically different was diagnosed during Martinez’s second opinion yesterday, it’s expected that the slugger will require surgery. Said surgery would likely sideline Martinez anywhere from eight to 10 months. While the recovery rate of such a procedure is extremely high, Martinez’s injury is expected to be of the season ending variety.
Martinez’s misstep set off a chain reaction in Detroit. Prince Fielder was unexpectedly signed and All-Star first baseman Miguel Cabrera is now trying to convert back into All-Star third baseman Miguel Cabrera.
