Edwin Jackson Rumors: Red Sox Out of Running

facebooktwitterreddit

Yesterday there were several conflicting reports coming out regarding the Boston Red Sox interest in free agent starting pitcher Edwin Jackson.  Initial reports said the Red Sox were in fact out of the running for the right-hander.  Later, sources indicated that Boston was still eying several free agent starters including Jackson.

Gordon Edesof ESPNBoston.com reported yesterday afternoon that the Red Sox were out of the Jackson sweepstakes.  A baseball source told Edes that, though the Red Sox made Jackson an offer, the club was “most likely out of the picture”.  The reasoning for this was because Jackson and agent Scott Boras had received better offers from other interested clubs.

Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald later reported that the Red Sox were “still talking” to free agent starters including Jackson.

Boston’s general manager Ben Cherington came out last evening and said, while he “wouldn’t rule out adding a starter”, he’d classify the chances of that happening as “unlikely”.  Cherington added that he “wouldn’t expect any major changes between now and report date”.

We found out yesterday that the Red Sox had put forth a one-year offer for Jackson in the $5-6 million range.  Jackson and Boras may be willing to sign a short-term deal this winter, but it’s unknown what their asking price for such an agreement would be.
