MLB Trade Rumors: Cubs “More Likely” to Move Garza at Deadline

Yesterday it was reported that the Chicago Cubs are expected to continue shopping right-hander Matt Garza this spring.  Today we find that some around the league continue to believe that Garza is more likely to be moved at the trade deadline than during Spring Training.  Several teams have expressed interest in Garza this offseason including the Red Sox, Blue Jays and Tigers.

Danny Knobler wrote Friday that, after speaking with someone familiar with Cubs management, he got the feeling that Chicago would look to trade Garza this spring.

Late last night Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports tweeted that he heard from a major league executive that the Cubs are more likely to move Garza closer to July’s trade deadline than before Opening Day.

We’ve heard that the Cubs are in no hurry to deal their ace, as Garza is under team control for two more years.  As a result, Cubs president Theo Epstein has time to wait for what he considers to be the best possible offer for Garza.

Come July, there figures to be less pitchers available, boosting the Cubs leverage.  Still, you’d have to think Epstein will continue to listen this spring in case some club decides to get aggressive and blow Chicago away with an offer.
