Red Sox Rumors: Alfredo Aceves, David Ortiz and Arbitration

Entering the weekend the Red Sox had a pair of players with unresolved arbitration cases.  They were able to check one of said cases off their to-do list, but not the one garnering national attention.

Boston and pitcher Alfredo Aceves reacheda one-year, non-guaranteed contract agreement this weekend.  Aceves’s new deal is for $1.2 million and includes up to $100,000 in built-in incentives.  The incentives can be achieved by Aceves as either a starter or reliever.

Last season for the Red Sox, Aceves maintained a 2.61 ERA to go with his 1.105 WHIP over 55 appearances and 114 innings pitched.  Aceves spent most of his time working out of Boston’s ‘pen, though he did start four games in 2011.  Sporting a career 2.93 ERA and 1.083 WHIP, the 29-year-old has been used mostly as a reliever at the major league level.

With their deal with Aceves, the Red Sox are left with a single unresolved arbitration case, but it’s a big one.  David Ortiz and the Red Sox have been unable to reach an agreement on a new contract and it may be because sides can’t settle on the length of Papi’s next deal.

ESPN’s Javier Maymi spoke with Ortiz in his native Dominican Republic this weekend where the slugger indicated that he’s still seeking a multi-year deal with the Red Sox.  Ortiz said that he’d like to get the situation over with and avoid an arbitration hearing.  Ortiz has left the negotiations up to his agents while he focuses on preparing for the spring.
