MLB Trade Rumors: Yankees, Pirates Talking A.J. Burnett

facebooktwitterreddit

We heard rumors yesterday that the Pirates were kicking the tires on Yankees starting pitcher A.J. Burnett.  While Pittsburgh’s interest in Burnett was listed as unknown, it now appears that the Yankees and Pirates are actively engaged in trade talks.  According to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com, the Yankees are willing to eat much of Burnett’s salary, but the Pirates appear to be holding out for more.  New York has also discussed Pirates slugger Garrett Jones, though Pittsburgh reportedly has no desire to move him.

The Burnett trade talks started a few weeks ago when the Yankees were suddenly blessed with a bevy of starting pitchers.  While they have a surplus of arms, New York is looking to add another bat or two before the spring and is currently working with a restricted budget.

To solve this problem, many have speculated that the Yankees could look to deal a starter to acquire a bat or free up salary to bring in a free agent hitter.  At this point it appears the Yankees would prefer to shed salary, as the Bombers have their sights set on several veteran FA’s including Raul Ibanez, Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui and Eric Chavez.

Enter the Pirates.  Pittsburgh has been turned down by several free agents this winter as they’ve pursued a veteran presence for their starting rotation.  Heyman reported this morning that the Pirates are holding out for the Yankees to pick up more of Burnett’s tab.  It’s also been reported that Pittsburgh has rebuffed the Yankees request for Garrett Jones.
