Roy Oswalt Rumors: Announcement Coming Today

It appears the day has come.  Free agent starting pitcher Roy Oswalt is reportedly set to make an announcement.  While the nature of said announcement is unknown, it’s anticipated that Oswalt will declare where he will pitch in 2012.  No one team appears to be a clear favorite at this point, but Oswalt has been most closely tied to the Red Sox, Rangers, Cardinals and Reds this offseason.

Oswalt’s agent Bob Garber told Gordon Edes of ESPN that his client is going to make an announcement today.  That’s as much as we know.  While most would assume Oswalt is set to reveal which jersey he will don this season, the right-hander could say any number of things.

There is an outside chance that Oswalt retires.  It’s unlikely, but the 34-year-old did deal with a back injury last season that was at first thought to be career-threatening.

Oswalt could also announce a timeframe for a future decision.  With the amount of press he’s already received this offseason, I find this unlikely but not impossible.

At this point no team is a clear favorite to sign Oswalt, as each of the clubs that have been most closely tied to the veteran are not clear fits.  The Reds say they are not interested as do the Rangers.  The Red Sox are interested, but Oswalt’s not sold on pitching in Boston.  Oswalt would love to join the Cardinals, but it’s unclear if they have a desire to make room in their budget or rotation for him.

So we are left waiting, but hopefully not for much longer.  What do you think Oswalt’s announcement will be, or at this point, do you even care?
