Yadier Molina, St. Louis Cardinals Restart Contract Talks

According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch the Cardinals have re-engaged in contract extension talks with catcher Yadier Molina.  Negotiations had been tabled, and Molina made it clear earlier this week that he was not interested in holding contract discussions during the regular season.  Molina is entering the final year of his current contract, and if he and the Cardinals are unable to reach a new deal he will hit free agency following the 2012 season.

Earlier this week we discovered that extension negotiations between the Cardinals and their All-Star backstop had been tabled for the time being.  Later in the week Molina and his representation made it clear that he was not interested in discussing a new contract once spring training concluded.

The Post-Dispatch is reporting that Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak met with Molina’s agent to talk contract this week.  Apparently Molina’s agent was in camp twice this week and extension talks were restarted.  No real details have surfaced, but a source told Goold that recent talks have gone in a positive direction.

Molina’s agent, Melvin Roman, recently told the Post-Dispatch of his client’s preferences.  According to Roman, Molina would like to have an extension nailed out before Opening Day.  If an agreement is not reached, then Molina will not discuss the matter again until the offseason.
