Adonis Garcia Rumors: Yankees Haven’t Made Garcia an Offer

Earlier this week it was reported that the Oakland Athletics and New York Yankees had offers on the table for Cuban player Adonis Garcia.  However, the A’s came out and strongly denied these reports, leading many to question the validity of New York’s offer.  It appears those questions were warranted, as Marc Craig of the Star-Ledger reported yesterday that the Yankees have in fact not made Garcia an offer.

The initial report claimed that the Yankees and A’s had each made six-year offers to Garcia totaling $16 and $18 million.  Soon after this report was released, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle spoke with the A’s regarding Garcia.  Oakland told Slusser that they had not made Garcia an offer and strongly denied the report in general.

With half of the story being shot down, this led many to question the validity of the other half.  New York had been quiet regarding Garcia, but Craig spoke with Yankees general manager Brian Cashman who confirmed that the club hasn’t made the 26-year-old an offer.

What had many raising their eyebrows at the initial report was not the fact that teams were interested in Garcia, but the multi-million dollar contract offers that were said to be on the table for him.

In general, teams are torn regarding Garcia’s best position.  The A’s view him as an infielder while the Yankees believe he’s a better fit in the outfield.  While he’s said to have surprising power for a player his size, scouts in general do not seem to be not very high on Garcia.  For this reason, many were skeptical that a team would agree to such a deal for, in essence, a 26-year-old utility player.
