Zack Greinke Going Agent Shopping

According to Jim Bowden of ESPN, the agent-less wonder that is Zack Greinke is on the hunt for representation.  Greinke separated with his former agency, CAA, last year, and has been acting on his own with free agency on the horizon.  Perhaps now realizing the magnitude of his pending deal and the negotiating that will be involved, Bowden said Greinke now plans on hiring an agent.

Greinke is poised to become one of the hottest commodities on the free agent market if he is unable to reach a contract extension with the Milwaukee Brewers.  The 2009 American Cy Young winner hasn’t been as impressive over the past two seasons, but the right-hander still figures to command quite the commitment in today’s pitching-deprived market place.

Last month, Kyle took a look at exactly what kind of deal Greinke will command.  In his opinion, Greinke is probably looking at a contract a bit below what the Los Angeles Angels gave Jared Weaver.  This would make sense, especially if he ends up agreeing on an extension with the Brewers.  However, if Greinke hits the open market, there’s no telling what type of contract offers he could draw, especially if Cole Hamels and Matt Cain re-up with their current squads.

Bowden reported that Greinke is considering several agents at this time, including; Brodie Van Wagenen of CAA, Casey Close of Excel Sports Management, Adam Katz of Wasserman Media Group and Seth Levinson of ACES.  These are all heavy hitters, as Close represents Derek Jeter, Ryan Howard, Jason Heyward and Mark Teixeira, Katz represents the Cuban sensation Yoenis Cespedes, and Levinson represents David Wright and Jonathan Papelbon.
