Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com is reporting that the Cleveland Indians have reached an agreement on a two-year contract extension with shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera. The deal is set to buy out one year of Cabrera’s free agency, and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports is reporting that the 26-year-old’s new contract is worth $16.5 million.
Cabrera is coming off an impressive 2011 season which earned him his first trip to the All-Star game as well as a Silver Slugger award.
Over his 604 at-bats with the Indians, Cabrera hit at a clip of .273/.332/.460. Among shortstops, Cabrera led the American League in RBI’s (92) and was second in home runs (25), doubles (32) and hits (165).
Over his five seasons with the Indians, Cabrera has a career line of .281/.343/.414. He’s making $4.55 million in 2012 and was scheduled for one more year of arbitration before becoming eligible for free agency following the 2013 season.
