Mike Fontenot Rumors: Phillies, Blue Jays Interested in Fontenot
According to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle, free agent infielder Mike Fontenot is drawing interest from the Philadelphia Phillies and Toronto Blue Jays. Fontenot had previously been tied to the Phillies, who have been seeking middle infield depth for some time, but the Blue Jays connection is a new one.
By now you’re all aware of what’s going on in Philadelphia. No Ryan Howard. No Chase Utley. No Michael Martinez. There is still Placido Polanco, but who knows how long until he’s joining the others on the Phillies disabled list.
For the reasons listed about the Phillies and Fontenot make a whole lot of sense.
The Blue Jays on the other hand…
When I saw the report I took a look at Toronto’s active roster to see if I was missing something. I then hopped over to Jays Journal, FanSided’s Blue Jays site, and editor Jared Macdonald confirmed my suspicions.
The Blue Jays have Kelly Johnson, Yunel Escobar and Brett Lawrie manning second, short and third. Toronto also has Omar Vizquel acting as a very capable utility infielder. Jared didn’t get the Fontenot/Blue Jays connection and warned readers not to put any stock into this rumor.
