David Wright Cleared to Resume Play

On Tuesday the New York Mets announced that All-Star third baseman David Wright had fractured his right pinky and was out indefinitely.  After receiving a second opinion on the injured hand yesterday, Wright has now been cleared to resume playing.  Wright will be a game-time decision tonight as the Mets prepare to take on the Philadelphia Phillies.

Wright sustained the injury diving back into first base to avoid getting picked off Monday.  Wright stayed in the game but his finger was later placed in a protective splint.

Initially it was unclear how much time the finger would cost Wright, as the Mets were not made aware of the severity of the injury until yesterday’s second opinion was received.

At this point Wright is cleared to play, but whether or not he rejoins the Mets lineup tonight will depend on how his finger is feeling.  It’s not yet fully healed and won’t be for some time, so Wright will have to get the injury to a point where he feels he can help the team.  Ideally he’ll wait until he’s ready to be back for good rather than rejoin the Mets for an evening only to sit out for a few additional games.
