Arizona Diamondbacks sign Brent Clevlen
The Arizona Diamondbacks are the eighth best team in our site’s power rankings, and the D’Backs have signed 28-year-old Octagon client Brent Clevlen to a minor league deal.
The former Detroit Tigers second rounder can play everywhere in the outfield, but he spends most of his time out in right. Clevlen was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies before the season, and he has played in 59 games (84 plate appearances) with the Atlanta Braves and Tigers in the Majors.
Brent Clevlen had a .303/.385/.536 triple slash playing for three teams last season in three different leagues, and he owns a career triple slash of .265/.344/.430 in eleven seasons in the minors.
Using the Minor League Equivalency Calculator and the Simple WAR Calculator, we find that Brent Clevlen should have an MLB triple slash of .234/.286/.370. Those numbers translate to 0.5 WAR, which isn’t terrible for a minor leaguer and shows that Clevlen is a quality player to have in AAA. He’s 28, provides experience over there, and he has a career .344 OBP in the minors.
While Clevlen will most likely never get to the Majors with the Diamondbacks, he’s a solid minor leaguer to have in your system and is skilled enough to come up and play in the MLB in a cameo. He’s the classic “Minor League Veteran Who Will Stay There Forever” guy, and he has some use to a team.
