Kyle Weiland to DL; Astros Recall Jordan Lyles
Kyle Weiland has been placed on the Houston Astros 15-day disabled list with a shoulder injury. The Astros have announced that 21-year-old right-hander Jordan Lyles will replace Weiland in their starting rotation.
Weiland was expected to have his next turn in the Astros rotation skipped due to ineffectiveness before it was announced that he would be hitting the club’s disabled list. Weiland lost each of his first three starts of the season while maintaining an ERA and WHIP of 6.62 and 1.755.
Weiland was one of the players acquired from the Boston Red Sox in the Mark Melancon trade. Weiland sports a career minor league ERA and WHIP of 3.58 and 1.270, though he’s struggled at the major league level (7.23 ERA, 1.701 WHIP).
Lyles had been one of the Astros top pitching prospects before making his major league debut last season. Over his 20 appearances including 15 starts, Lyles posted an ERA and WHIP of 5.36 and 1.415. During his five seasons in the minors, Lyles maintained an ERA and WHIP of 3.54 and 1.289 with 8.8 SO/9 and 2.5 BB/9.
