Mike Trout Called Up; Angels Release Bobby Abreu

The Los Angeles Angels have announced that they’ve released veteran outfielder/designated hitter Bobby Abreu.  To replace Abreu, the Angels have called up top prospect Mike Trout.  Angels manager Mike Scioscia confirmed that Trout “will play”, and some believe the 20-year-old will take over an everyday role with Los Angeles.

Just yesterday it was reported that, though he was destroying Triple-A pitching, it didn’t appear that Trout would be promoted to the majors in the near future.  Not even a day later the roster move was made and the top prospect is on his way back to the bigs.

So far this season with the Angels Triple-A affiliate, Trout had maintained a line of .403/.467/.623.  Over his 20 games played and 77 at-bats, Trout tallied 10 extra base hits, 21 runs scored, 13 RBIs and six stolen bases.

When spring training began, Abreu was worried that the Angels wouldn’t be able to provide him with the at-bats he desired.  This resulted in a call for a trade; a request the Angels tried their best to grant.  However, a deal with the Indians fell through and Abreu remained an Angel.

Over eight games and 24 at-bats Abreu went 5-24, good for an OPS of .593.  The veteran’s power numbers took a huge dip in 2011, and this season many question if Abreu can play the field any longer.  Abreu was owed $9 million this season in what was the final year of his contract.
