Vladimir Guerrero has resurfaced, and it’s once again for baseball-related news. According to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic, the Arizona Diamondbacks are going to work out Guerrero.
You can tell from Piecoro’s Tweet that he was surprised by the news of the Diamondbacks interest in Guerrero. Piecoro starts off with an ‘Uh, I guess’ before reporting that Arizona is planning on working out Guerrero. According to Piecoro, general manager Kevin Towers was the one to share the Guerrero news with reporters.
While Vlad is a nine-time All-Star and former American League Most Valuable Player, those days appear to be well behind him. Last season for the Orioles, Guerrero’s numbers once again declined. Though he was still able to post an OPS of .733, he did so while only appearing as a designated hitter.
Guerrero is no longer a viable option in the field, so many figured his limited list of suitors would not include National League teams. If Guerrero were to join the Diamondbacks, it would likely be as a pinch hitter off the bench.
Guerrero has been worked out by one other team recently, the Cleveland Indians. After this workout, the Indians decided to sign another veteran free agent in Johnny Damon.
Guerrero’s most recently been in the news for his arrest in the Dominican Republic following a brawl in a discotheque. Guerrero was ultimately released from jail and doesn’t face any charges stemming from the incident.
