It was reported last night that free agent veteran Bobby Abreu was drawing interest from several National League teams. Later in the evening Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reported that the Los Angeles Dodgers were in “serious talks” with Abreu.
According to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports, several NL clubs have been eyeing the recently released Abreu. While many question the 38-year-old’s ability in the field, Morosi said that by having teams in the Senior Circuit express interest in Abreu, one can deduce that playing the role of designated hitter isn’t his only option.
Beyond the Dodgers, Heyman reported that others clubs remain interested in Abreu. Heyman said that no deal has been finalized between Abreu and LA, as details need to be worked out.
If this deal wouldn’t get done due to details, it wouldn’t be the first time Abreu witnessed a potential transaction fall through. Before releasing him, the Angels nearly traded Abreu to the Indians before the sides disagreed over money.
One way or another, it appears that, as expected, Abreu will sign on with a new team in the near future. The veteran has been declining for some time, but he should still be able to get on base at at least a league-average clip.
This season, over his eight games and 24 at-bats with the Angels, Abreu only managed an OPS of .593. Still, last year the two-time All-Star tallied 30 doubles and 21 stolen bases while getting on base at a clip of .353.
