The San Diego Padres have placed left-hander Cory Luebke on their 15-day disabled list. Luebke, who’s dealing with a sore throwing shoulder, was slated to miss at least one start due to the discomfort before the Padres decided to give him two weeks to get right. Veteran Jeff Suppan started in place of Luebke last night and figures to hold the lefty’s spot until he’s able to return.
Prior to his trip to the DL, Luebke had been impressive for the Padres this season. Over his first five starts spanning 31 innings, Luebke maintained an ERA and WHIP of 2.61 and 1.161. His strikeout numbers are down (6.7 SO/9) from his career norm (9.3 SO/9), but Luebke has only surrendered one home run on the season and is holding opposing hitters to a .615 OPS.
Luebke developed into one of San Diego’s best pitchers last season. While appearing in 46 games, 17 of which were starts, Luebke compiled 139 2/3 innings with an ERA and WHIP of 3.29 and 1.067.
Suppan was a solid fill-in for Luebke last night. The 37-year-old logged five scoreless frames while holding the Milwaukee Brewers to four hits.
