Vladimir Guerrero Rumors: Diamondbacks Unsure About Vlad
Veteran free agent Vladimir Guerrero worked out for the Arizona Diamondbacks earlier this week. While it was initially reported that Guerrero “looked good”, Arizona didn’t seem to be a clear fit for the former slugger. Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers confirmed these beliefs yesterday, noting that the club is still determining if they are a fit for Guerrero or not.
Towers told Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic that Guerrero seemed to be in “decent shape” when the Diamondbacks worked him out in the DR. Towers said that the club had Guerrero take “30 or 40 swings” and that the 37-year-old “launched 15 to 20 balls out”. Towers also said that Guerrero took a few fly balls.
Still, Towers and the Diamondbacks are still determining if Guerrero is a fit for their club. A signing could depend on Chris Young’s injury and how long it takes the outfielder to return. Towers said that, if there is a fit, “it might only be temporary”.
Towers said that Guerrero’s potential role could be that of Wily Mo Pena’s 2011 stint with the Diamondbacks. Pena appeared in 17 games and registered 46 at-bats for the Diamondbacks last season.
