Casey Blake Announces Retirement

Casey Blake announced his retirement from baseball yesterday.  A 13-year veteran, Blake was released by the Colorado Rockies this spring and, despite drawing recent interest from the Texas Rangers, told the DesMoinesRegister.com that he is content with his decision to retire from Major League Baseball.

Blake started the spring with the Rockies, but was released before the team broke camp to start the regular season.  Since then, Blake has been contacted twice by the Rangers, who expressed interest in signing the 38-year-old.  Texas planned on using Blake in a platoon role or as an additional right-handed bat off their bench.

However, after mulling over the opportunity, Blake has decided to call it a career.  Blake told the Register that he had been considering retirement for some time, though a final decision hadn’t been reached until recently.

Over his 13 seasons in the bigs, Blake was a member of the Toronto Blue Jays, Minnesota Twins, Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Indians and Los Angeles Dodgers.  Blake was more of a journeyman before spending significant periods of time with the Indians and Dodgers.

Primarily manning the role of third baseman during his time in the majors, Blake maintained a career line of .264/.336/.442 with 1186 hits, 167 home runs and 616 RBIs.
