Starlin Castro Won’t Talk Contract In-Season

Starlin Castro’s agent, Paul Kinzer, has said the Chicago Cubs dynamic shortstop won’t be seeking a contract extension during the season.  Kinzer told Fred Mitchell of the Chicago Tribune that he and Castro don’t “want any distractions” during the season.  Kinzer said that he and Castro are willing to talk long-term deal with the Cubs eventually, just not until the offseason.

Castro is off to another strong start for the Cubs.  Over his first 31 games and 124 at-bats, Castro is hitting at a clip of .347/.359/.468 with 10 extra base hits and 11 stolen bases.

Castro spent much of the 2010-11 seasons with the Cubs and, though he’s still only 22 years old, has compiled 1261 major league at-bats.  Over this span, Castro has maintained a career line of .308/.345/.427.

Castro has already reached Super-Two status, meaning that he will have four years of arbitration eligibility.  Castro is set to enter his first year of arbitration in 2013 and will become a free agent in 2017.

Kinzer noted that he knows the Cubs want to keep Castro around long-term.  Kinzer added that he’s sure he and Castro will be talking with the Cubs eventually, he just doesn’t think it will be during the season.
