Red Sox Rumors: Kevin Youkilis a Fit for the Dodgers?
Boston Red Sox third baseman Kevin Youkilis could find himself on the trade market this summer. The Red Sox are currently struggling and have several areas of need, and Boston’s heir apparent at third base, Will Middlebrooks, looks as if he’s ready to go. While several teams could target the veteran if he becomes available, Buster Olney of ESPN speculates that the Los Angeles Dodgers could be a fit for Youkilis.
Olney reports that the Dodger could seek an upgrade at first base this summer if James Loney isn’t able to turn things around. Though Loney appeared to be a promising young player when he debuted with the Dodgers, the 28-year-old has been just mediocre over his last several seasons in LA.
This mediocrity has turned into an even more disappointing performance so far this season. Over his 32 games and 100 at-bats, Loney has only managed a line of .230/.300/.330 for the Dodgers.
While Youkilis hasn’t been much better, he does have a superior track record. If Youkilis is able to prove that he’s healthy and still has something of the career .878 OPS player left in the tank, teams such as the Dodgers could become extremely interested in adding his bat down the stretch.
Youkilis is making $12 million and his contract includes a $13 million team option or $1 million buyout for 2013.
