MLB Game Recaps: Joey Votto Slams Reds Home Winners

There is generally no greater moment, offensively at least, than a walk-off grand-slam.  Now there are certain scenarios we all dream of as kids.  Those are the scenarios that can amplify the moment.  But the fact is, a walk-off grand-slam is a walk-off, and it’s a grand-slam.  That’s a pretty exciting combination.  Joey Votto struck for both yesterday.

Entering the ninth inning, Joey Votto had already homered twice, but the Reds were still trailing 6-5.  The Nationals had managed to stay just ahead of the MVP first baseman’s onslaught.  At least until the ninth.  Votto stepped to the plate once more, this time with all the bags full.  On a 2-2 count, Votto slammed the pitch over the right-center field wall to send the Reds home winners.

Votto’s first home run was a solo shot in the first.  He hit a second solo home run in the fourth.

Neither starter fared very well in the game.  Edwin Jackson went five innings and allowed three runs.  Bronson Arroyo went five and allowed four runs.  For Votto though, the game was indicative of his improvements at the plate.  “It’s certainly a work in progress, but I think I hit more barrels today than I have all season,” he said.
