Desmond Jennings to Tampa Bay Rays DL with Left Knee Sprain

Desmond Jennings has been placed on the Tampa Bay Rays 15-day disabled list with a left knee sprain.  The Rays didn’t provide much info on Jennings’s injury or how long he’s expected to remain on the disabled list, only saying the sprain hasn’t gotten any better or any worse.  To replace Jennings on their roster, the Rays have recalled Stephen Vogt from Triple-A.

Jennings sustained his injury during a May 6 contest against the Oakland A’s.  After taking a few days off, Jennings was used as a pinch hitter last Wednesday against the New York Yankees and again Friday against the Baltimore Orioles.  Friday was Jennings’s last appearance so his move to the DL is retroactive to Saturday May 12.

Jennings got off to a slow start to the 2012 campaign before picking things up toward the end of April.  Jennings collected hits in 13 of his final 15 games in April and had increased his line to .273/.336/.409 before sustaining his injury on May 6.

Vogt made his debut for the Rays earlier this season, going 0-13 over his first seven games with the club.  Vogt was selected by the Rays in the 12th round of the 2007 MLB Draft and has posted an OPS of .803 over his six seasons in the minors.
