Torii Hunter Placed on Angels Restricted List Following Son’s Arrest

Torii Hunter has been placed on the Los Angeles Angels restricted list due to what was initially termed as personal reasons by the club.  It was later determined that Hunter’s leave of absence from the Angels was a result of the arrest of his son, Darius Hunter.  Darius was arrested Monday and charged with sexual assault of a child, according to NBCDFW.com.

Hunter’s son and four others were arrested on charges related to the alleged sexual assault.  Darius and three others were charged with sexual assault of a child, while the other involved was charged with unlawful restraint.

Darius’s name was released by the police because he is 17 years old and as such deemed to be an adult.  The police involved in the case didn’t have many details to share but did say that more arrests could be on the horizon.

Hunter was not available for comment, but did respond via his Twitter account.  Hunter thanked his supporters for their prayers and support and noted that this situation “is very tough for a father”.

Hunter is in his fifth season with the Angels.  Over his first 121 at-bats of the 2012 season, Hunter posted a line of .256/.328/.742 while playing mostly right field for LA.

To replace Hunter on their roster, the Angels are expected to call up Ryan Langerhans from Triple-A.  Langerhans has maintained an OPS of .892 with 12 extra base hits, 20 RBIs and 25 runs scored over his 117 at-bats with the Angels Triple-A affiliate.  Langerhans has spent parts of nine seasons playing at the major league level and has a career OPS of .705 over his 1238 at-bats.
