Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Brett Lawrie was suspended four games by Major League Baseball for his “aggressive actions toward Umpire Bill Miller”. MLB released a statement handing down the suspension and undisclosed fine to Lawrie for “throwing his helmet in Miller’s vicinity”. Lawrie has decided to appeal MLB’s ruling.
After disagreeing with calls made by Miller during the 9th inning of the Blue Jays Tuesday night game, ultimately resulting in a called third strike, Lawrie proceeded to argue with the umpire. After Miller tossed Lawrie from the game, the third baseman spiked his batting helmet at the umpire’s feet. Said helmet bounced into Miller, making contact with the umpire.
There was no question that Lawrie would be suspended for his actions, the only thing that remained to be determined was how harsh of a penalty would MLB hand down. Many don’t believe it was Lawrie’s intent to hit Miller with his helmet, and MLB showed their agreement with the four-game suspension. If Lawrie had been charged with truly going after the home plate umpire, he would have received a much heftier ban.
Lawrie continued to suit up for the Blue Jays last night as he’s decided to appeal MLB’s decision. Lawrie told MLB.com’s Gregor Chisholm that, if nothing else, he would like to have his side of the story heard. Though Lawrie’s act was clearly wrong, many believe that Miller should also be held accountable in some way for his questionable calls regarding balls and strikes.
John J Parent provided his take on the situation yesterday. What are your thoughts? Was the Lawrie suspension too harsh, too light, or just right? Should Miller be punished as well?
