Vance Worley Hits Philadelphia Phillies DL
Vance Worley has been placed on the Philadelphia Phillies 15-day disabled list due to elbow inflammation. Philadelphia had initially said they were skipping Worley’s start, but they ultimately decided to place the right-hander on the DL. Kyle Kendrick took over Worley’s place in the Phillies rotation and Joe Savery was called up to take his spot on Philadelphia’s roster.
Worley has shown that last season wasn’t a fluke, as before his injury he was able to maintain an ERA and WHIP of 3.07 and 1.341 over his first seven starts. Worley has improved on his SO/9 (9.1) while keeping his BB/9 even with his career mark (3.1).
The Phillies decided to send Worley to the DL after a Wednesday MRI uncovered inflammation in the 24-year-old’s elbow. Philadelphia has said that there is no structural damage and that they plan to shut Worley down for a week before he begins throwing again. Only at that point, depending on how Worley’s elbow responds, will the Phillies know how long they will be without the right-hander.
Kyle Kendrick filled in admirably for Worley last night, holding the Cubs to one earned run on three hits with four strikeouts and no walks. Kendrick has now started four games for the Phillies this season while also pitching out of the ‘pen. Over his 25 2/3 innings pitched, Kendrick sports a 5.96 ERA and 1.68 WHIP.
Joe Savery has logged eight innings for the Phillies so far this season, posting an ERA and WHIP of 4.50 and 1.000 over that span. A left-hander, Savery has maintained an ERA and WHIP of 4.06 and 1.497 over his six seasons in the minors.
