Roy Oswalt has reportedly worked out for several clubs including the Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Phillies and Texas Rangers. Yesterday, Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington didn’t deny that Oswalt threw for the team, but he said there was nothing additional to report at this time. Nick Carfado of the Boston Globe added that the Red Sox and Oswalt have yet to discuss a contract.
Roy Oswalt figures to be a hot commodity this summer as teams look to acquire rotation reinforcement for their stretch runs. Oswalt has his eye on a contender, and there are several such clubs in need of pitching.
The Red Sox are one of these teams, and Boston has been tied to Oswalt since the winter when he announced he’d consider signing a one-year deal. Money has been an issue in discussions between the Red Sox and Oswalt, as has the veteran’s preference to play for a team located close to his Mississippi home.
These geographical restrictions have reportedly been removed from the equation, and the Red Sox could certainly use Oswalt’s presence in their rotation if they hope to rise to the top of the American League East.
At this point it seems as if teams are still trying to figure out what they could potentially have in Oswalt. The right-hander has an impressive track record (career ERA and WHIP of 3.21 and 1.194), though he is 34 and dealt with injuries for much of the 2011 season.
